One of the orchestra’s founding members, Steve Caver, passed away on May 28, 2023, at his home in Ajijic, Mexico, after a short illness. He was born June 26, 1954, in Baldwyn, Mississippi. Steve was one of the founding members of the South Fork Nature Center at Greers Ferry Lake in Arkansas where he spent many weekends at his cabin. Steve was multi-talented, playing countless musical instruments. He was a member of the Little Rock Wind Symphony for many years until retiring in 2010 and moving to Ajijic.
Steve fully embraced Mexican culture becoming a dual citizen of Mexico. In 2018, he helped to form the Lake Chapala Community Orchestra (later to become the Lake Chapala Orchestra) and played in both the horn and trombone sections. He also volunteered to teach local kids music lessons and was active in many charities. His home was the scene of many fundraisers from the local humane society to music organizations. He entertained many visiting professional musicians and friends at this home, and it was common to find them gathered around his Yamaha Baby Grand piano for a sing along.
Steve’s generosity and kindness knew no bounds and he will be missed by many people in both Lakeside and the US. His partner, Francisco Deloya and his brother Mitch Caver have set up a Steve Caver Memorial Fund to benefit his beloved Lake Chapala Orchestra. Funds raised will go towards support of our young musicians and much needed equipment to assist the orchestra’s progress.
